Three types of application

  • Power applications provide fast transfers of energy (e.g. to smooth a noisy signal), such as in PV or wind turbine outputs.
  • Energy applications provide sustained release of stored energy. The perfect example is maximum self-consumption of domestic PV. All day you want to store up the sun’s energy; at night you want to release it at a fairly constant rate.
  • Standby applications provide backup power to give critical machinery time to shut down safely or ride through a grid outage.

UltraBattery sees only one application

UltraBattery is unique as a lead-acid platform that excels at all these applications, combining them into a single multipurpose application.

Multipurpose applications are desirable because multiple saving and revenue streams can be applied to the one installation. Traditionally, lead-acid batteries have ruled the standby power market, lead-acid and various other chemistries have performed best in energy applications, and cycling batteries have performed best in power applications.

UltraBattery, as a single product, can do everything standard lead-acid batteries can do as well as everything cycling batteries (including lithium-based chemistries) can do.

It also cycles like nothing else, outperforming most cycling-based batteries including those based on lithium.

One technology brings multipurpose applications together

Power applications

Megawatt scale

Power applications are applications requiring rapid transfer of power. At large scales, these applications act like a fast-acting brake-and-release on the grid. Several large, multi-MW swings might happen in rapid succession – perhaps 100 times or more each hour. UltraBattery handles these swings 24 hours a day. Sometimes these swings come from renewable power stations. UltraBattery has been demonstrated to operate efficiently in grid-scale wind smoothing in Australia and in grid-scale PV smoothing in the US.

Another variable application is frequency regulation. If the grid has a surplus of power over load – such as in peak PV moments – then large coal/hydro/nuclear turbines spin more easily. As they spin faster, they cause the grid’s frequency to increase. In those moments UltraBattery stores excess energy to help balance the system.

A few minutes later the sun might go behind a cloud or a factory’s large machinery might suddenly start up. Now the grid can have an imbalance of load over power. It becomes harder to spin the turbines and the frequency begins to drop. Then UltraBattery releases energy into the system to help reduce the load on the turbines and keep the grid frequency constant.

Kilowatt scale

We’ve applied our experience in delivering MW-scale frequency regulation and renewable smoothing to develop UltraBattery products for kW-scale users. At this scale, a load partially powered by PV panels or diesel generation can be greatly assisted by rapid movements of power in and out of batteries.

Energy applications

Energy applications are those that require a sustained release of energy over a long period. For this purpose, UltraBattery has all the benefits of traditional lead-acid batteries, the current go-to technology for energy applications such as domestic off-grid.

Traditional lead-acid batteries do well when the application is well defined and when it is possible to determine in advance the likely periods of charge and discharge. Generally, different types of lead-acid batteries are used depending on whether the energy is needed infrequently, such as in data-center and critical-load standby, or daily, such as in maximum self-consumption of PV.

Covering all applications

UltraBattery opens the floodgates for lead-acid chemistry to excel in power applications, while retaining its traditional prowess in energy applications.

This means that, unlike almost any other chemistry, UltraBattery is both a power battery and an energy battery. It’s also a fast-release or slow-release energy battery.

It does all these jobs effortlessly and, moreover, simultaneously.

Standby applications: The giant on the grid

Thousands of megawatt hours of energy are stored in lead-acid stand-by batteries protecting critical loads around the world. Together they represent by far the world’s largest stationary battery application.

These batteries are almost exclusively lead-acid “data centre” batteries – which are generally large-format sealed float batteries. These are reliable and powerful, yet passive until called upon in a grid outage.

Waking the giant

Ecoult has developed partnerships and business models with some large energy and grid operators to begin “activating” this type of battery bank with UltraBattery.

We’re waking the sleeping giant with applications that give businesses a revenue stream 24/7 from their stand-by batteries.

Battery owners can sell ancillary service support to the grid operator, such as:

  • frequency regulation
  • renewable smoothing
  • power quality correction
  • demand management

And yet still have their batteries reliably available for standby support.

Because UltraBattery technology operates over a wide range of charge and provides high-power charge and discharge, this two-in-one dual purposing may be supported by an UltraBattery installation that is similarly sized to a traditional lead-acid stand-by battery bank.
