UltraBattery is designed for renewable integration and has been proven to assist renewable penetration into grids and microgrids on kW and MW scales.
Renewables are here to stay. Increasing numbers of people want to source their power from nature for economic and environmental reasons. But some problems of renewables are well known:
- They’re not always there when you need them;
- They can give fluctuating, low quality power;
- Feed-in tariffs are disappearing;
- They often produce their highest output at the period of lowest demand;
- They can play havoc with a grid designed to send power out from the power station at the centre.
Energy storage makes renewables work. But not just any energy storage.
It takes a particular combination of high power, fast response, deep cycling, partial charge operation, monitoring, remote viewing, temperature tolerance and robust chemistry to work.
Ecoult brings all of that together – like almost nobody else can – in what we think are the world’s best energy storage products.
Weak grids often begin at urban fringes. Designed to feed power out to low density dwellings, the weak grid doesn’t cope well with higher power requirements in modern dwellings and, crucially, doesn’t have the strength to cope with the daytime power coming back, from an increasingly high penetration of domestic PV installations.
Weak grids can be strengthened with expensive capital works, or bolstered with UltraBattery storage and/or renewables. Often the economics make storage the “no-brainer” option.
Rather than benefiting from increased PV installation, weak grids become more unstable as the solar power fluctuates. The marginal cost to service each customer is high in weak grid regions so the traditional fix – strengthening the grid’s infrastructure with capital works – is particularly expensive in weak grid areas.
What happens on weak grids?
- Long roadside transmission lines, easily downed in poor weather, stretch long distances and play havoc with power quality.
- Rural equipment, such as welders and machinery with large start-up power requirements, can cause spikes, sags and overtones all along the power line.
- Due to fluctuations and instabilities, things can get worse, not better, when renewables are included in the mix.
Expensive line replacement
The traditional solution has been to replace or upgrade the roadside line with a high-voltage transmission line. While well understood, this is an extraordinarily expensive solution.
Strategically placed UltraBattery solution
The low-cost, distributed, fast-cycling energy storage provided by UltraBattery, whether owned by the utility or by the end user, may make line upgrade unnecessary.
An installation of a few kilowatts at a domestic site can strengthen one household’s position. A larger installation controlled by the grid operator can make a world of difference to everyone on the line.
UltraBattery is the efficient, safe and sustainable solution to weak grid problems.
Low Cost, High Energy
Our products maximize energy efficiency and availability while minimizing costs.
Power and Energy
We offer true multi-purpose technology well suited to high-power and deep-energy applications – even simultaneously.
We steward a truly sustainable, closed-loop technology that is helping to create a greener, lower-carbon energy system for the planet.
A single high-energy, high-power, partial-state-of-charge (PSoC) battery bank can insulate one property from the vagaries of the grid and create an island of smooth influence for neighboring properties.
Several such battery banks can be transformative for every customer on the line.
Efficient energy storage can also enable renewables to play a bigger role on the line. Rather than every customer dumping their full PV load of renewable onto a stressed grid in the middle of the day when it is not needed, storage can work as an averaging influence.
Batteries can be charged either by yesterday’s sun or overnight from the grid. They are depleted in the breakfast rush, then start to absorb the excess as the day heats up. Local industrial loads can take advantage of a grid strengthened by storage and, by the time people arrive home at the end of the day, their batteries are fully charged for the evening.
Efficient energy storage can be significantly cheaper than upgrading long stretches of powerlines.
A perfectly timed solution
As grid operators turn increasingly to measures such as demand management (rewarding customers who agree to have their supply curtailed at peak times), and customers increasingly install more demanding equipment (large amounts of PV and machinery such as air-conditioners), the rise in the availability of affordable distributed energy storage could not be better timed.
With storage in place, rather than managing the challenges of a weak grid the operator can observe a smooth, manageable and slowly fluctuating demand with the perfect balance of generation and load.
That’s what drives us at Ecoult to put UltraBattery everywhere.
