Our rock solid commitment to our customers is known throughout the USA. East Penn Manufacturing (EPM) is the largest single-site manufacturer of lead batteries in the world. EPM is family owned and has been producing and supplying the world’s highest-quality batteries for more than 70 years. Its customers rely on EPM’s DEKA brand of batteries for their superior value, proven reliability, and quality.

Maintenance

The Deka® UltraBattery® is a hybrid, sealed lead battery and carbon ultracapacitor.

Like all high-quality sealed lead batteries, it remains virtually maintenance free throughout its service life. Unlike traditional lead batteries, the Deka UltraBattery is also fully monitored throughout its service life, so that any rare deviations from normal behavior can be rectified before any reduction in system operation occurs.

All Ecoult installations are designed for a lifetime of minimal service and intervention.

  • Our innovative passively cooled battery racking system promotes optimal uniform string temperatures with minimal (and often no) need for fans and air-conditioning. Moving parts such as those found in traditional cooling equipment are the most frequent source of onsite service calls. The solid-state nature of the Deka UltraBattery installation, coupled with its high-quality components and design, makes onsite intervention extremely uncommon.
  • Our battery strings are self-equalizing and operate in a partial state of charge using Ecoult’s proprietary battery management system. The state of charge band used in the Deka UltraBattery charge and discharge regime gives protection from the types of premature cell degradation (e.g. hydrogen gassing and electrode corrosion) that occur more readily at high states of charge.

The Deka UltraBattery is a low-maintenance technology offering the same robust daily performance as other high-quality valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries.

Our Systems

For our kilowatt-scale installations, we work with and train channel installers and technicians to fully understand Ecoult’s and East Penn Manufacturing’s systems, so that they can successfully diagnose, treat, and troubleshoot our integrated energy storage systems.

Should intervention be required, service diagnosis and system control is typically conducted remotely, saving site downtime and preventing unnecessary onsite service calls. Should a site visit be required, our installer partners and technicians are intimately familiar with our energy storage systems and will successfully analyze and troubleshoot most problems before arriving onsite, again saving site downtime.

Battery Replacement

It is extremely unusual for lead cells to to fail suddenly. In the extremely rare event of a poorly performing cell, the monitoring system will register a slowly growing deviation within a string and a battery swap will be straightforwardly performed. And of course, the underperforming battery can be recycled: the Deka UltraBattery is virtually 100% recyclable. Each of the three major components (lead, plastic, and acid) can be safely recycled and used in making new energy storage devices.

Unlike competing technologies, the Deka UltraBattery units manufactured in different batches are essentially identical and may be swapped out with minimal or no effect on overall string performance.

Our physical system design provides a wireless link (optical isolation) between the battery unit and the control system. When a new battery is delivered to site, the only action required is to unscrew the terminal connections and connect them to the new battery unit. The monitoring system will then self-discover the new battery and immediately begin background cell balancing and equalization to bring the new unit into line with the others in the string. Often only the string affected needs to be offline during this brief procedure, and system operation is minimally affected.

Real-time Monitoring, Reporting, & Alerting

Our battery systems do more than collect and store energy. They also collect and store vital information.

Data about your battery and power system can be made available online as high-quality reporting, giving you the power to control and interact with the battery system remotely rather than requiring you to travel to site to check and make adjustments.

Battery-level Monitoring

Every Deka UltraBattery comes with its own monitor, installed for life.

The on-board monitor measures the voltage, current, and temperature of the battery, second by second, and keeps a compressed historic record for future reference.

The monitor is also an active element in the control of the batteries, allowing differential rates of charge/discharge to every battery in the string to maintain string equalization.

The monitor passes this data wirelessly to the system-level controller, which logs time-series data and creates system-level information to show you how your system is reporting, both instantaneously and historically.

System-level Monitoring & Reporting

The data sent from the battery monitor is collated and made available to a battery system control, and from there out to the application control layer – generally through an inverter or power control system (PCS), depending on the application’s complexity.

This data is also available to our HMI (human–machine interface) and cloud data management system, Ecoult.Live, which allows you to see and control the state of your battery system or individual battery and visually gauge the state of charge, voltage, current, and temperature, and monitor any alarms.

The HMI is browser-based and therefore device-independent. User-level and installer-level screens allow view-only or view-and-control access.

Configurable alerts and alarms give timely warnings of system conditions, which may sometimes help to identify problems in non-monitored supply or load equipment such as diesel generators or pumps.

All our energy storage systems are designed with the needs of our customers and long-term performance in mind. Our products are monitored down to individual battery level, so your battery system can be checked and controlled by users you have authorized. You can allow site-only login or access via the internet to monitor and control your site from anywhere in the world.

Remote visibility and system control for diagnosis and repair, with minimized site visits.

The monitoring and control system is equipped with sensors and battery-level hardware to allow sophisticated alarm, alert and even shut-down responses to various inputs.

Unexpected loss of supply current on a remote site may be a function of solar, wind or generator failure. In such cases, the Deka UltraBattery system is typically set up to alert technical support and can act as a UPS to maintain critical site functions. Alarm functions and automated responses exist to alert users to unexpected values for all modes of operation – to account for unexpected temperatures, voltages, currents, and other factors.

String balancing and equalization, which maximizes the effective available energy in a battery system, takes place in the background, and the overall voltage deviation across batteries within a string is reported through the monitoring system.

Balanced strings are crucial to the effectiveness and smooth operation of a battery system, and Ecoult’s Deka UltraBattery systems are designed to converge any outliers toward an equalized state on every battery cycle.

Our monitoring can make a critical difference to your operations.

Monitoring of every site

Deka UltraBattery monitoring does more than just keep an eye on the batteries. Because it monitors power flows through the inverter, the system can instantly alert remote or off-grid customers of power systems malfunctions.

When one of our telecoms customers had a generator fault on an off-grid base station, the Ecoult system registered the event and alerted the maintenance team. The Deka UltraBattery then sustained the site in UPS mode, holding the fort until technicians could get there to repair the generator, so that none of their customers lost coverage.
